  • A dancer and chanter for 25 years with world-renown Halau O Kekuhi in Hilo, Hawai`i, Kiwala`o was elevated to Kumu Hula in January 2007.

Length: 3 days & 2 nights

Location: Halau Ulu Lehua I `Ola`a

  • A personal retreat located on the east side of Hawai`i Island. The site is located 9 miles from Hilo and is only a 30-minute drive to the home of our Fire Goddess, Pele, at Kilauea Volcano.

Cost: $950 per person (Group Rates Available)

Program Description:

Experience this ancient form of poetic imagery which Hula provides and feel the spirit of Hula fill your body with new found energy and flexibility.

You’ll expand your horizons as you delve into the rich cultural heritage of this island as you learn what it means to be Hawaiian. The dances and chants you learn will tell so many stories. Join Kiwala`o and:

  • Learn basic hula steps and ancient dances
  • Learn chanting techniques and exercises /use of the “ha” (breath)
  • Pa`i Ka Ipu (rhythms on the gourd drum) which accompany hula, will be shared
  • Gain knowledge about hula implements, adornments and costuming
  • Learn the art of lei making
  • Introduction to Hawaiian language

This retreat is ideal for students of dance, students of life and for those who are dancers at heart.
